"Thermostat" encourages intergenerational conversation and learning. Grade 7 to adult.

Includes an 18-page supplement focusing on militarism in Canada. Addresses such questions as: Is Canada really a "peacekeeping" nation? Does this country have a military-industrial complex?

Cruz Cordero, speaking in Thermostat:

As Christians in this world today, wexe2x80x99re called to be not thermometers that change upon the temperature. If it is cold the temperature mercury goes down. If it is warm outside the mercury of the thermometer goes up. Well, thermostats are different ... thermostats regulate the surroundings. If the surrounding is cold then the thermostat is going to change the surrounding depending upon how the thermostat is set. As Christians we should be thermostats in our society. We should be transforming and changing the climate of our culture rather than being conformed by it. ... Jesus Christ himself fulfilled his own teachings and he lived in a time where it was very violent. He experienced the most violent thing that anyone could have experienced, the crucifixion. Yet he didnxe2x80x99t raise a fist, didnxe2x80x99t even have any bad words to share. His life, his peaceful life that he lived among sinners, among unpeaceful people, changed the course of history. So imagine what we can do by following in his steps and living in peace. How much can we change? I believe we can change a lot.

Designed originally for an American audience, but contains many parts relevant to issues faced by Canadian youth.
