| Notes | This documentary tells the story of Haiti's violent and troubled past, from the arrival of Columbus in 1492 to the overthrow of Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 1992. This five hundred year history is traced in an exhibition of paintings by Haitian artists. These colourful images form the main focus of the program.
The West Indian island remains one of the poorest places in the world, but the paintings reveal the rich ethnic, political and cultural heritage of its people, and the natural beauty of its landscapes. Despite the tragedies Haiti has seen, what remains most striking about the painters' scenes of funerals, executions, ambushes, massacres, crucifixion and so on, is their optimism. |
